Hair in the Community CIC, a sister organisation of Hair at the Academy, is a newly formed not-for-profit social enterprise with a community-driven mission.

Our goal is to fund charitable activities that support individuals in Exeter and the wider Devon & Somerset area, particularly those who are vulnerable and in need.

We aim to provide free hairdressing, barbering, and beauty services to disadvantaged individuals, along with vocational education and training opportunities.

Through these initiatives, we aspire to help people realise their potential, enhance their mental health and wellbeing, and assist them in securing employment or advancing their education.

Hair in the Community CIC is collaborating with the trusted team at Hair at the Academy, a renowned organisation celebrating its 20th year in business.

Led by Mary Pugsley MBE, our award-winning team has facilitated thousands of individuals in acquiring essential skills, obtaining an education, and finding secure employment.

We have also been working closely with St Petrock’s Homeless charity to provide free hair & beauty services to those in need, and have seen amazing results showing just how important personal grooming is for someone’s confidence and self-worth.

“I am beyond thrilled to unveil our not-for-profit venture dedicated to serving the people of Exeter. Community work has been a lifelong passion and I see potential in every single individual, particularly those who have conquered unimaginable obstacles in life.

“Exeter has been my home for most of my life and it has a truly distinct spirit, one that is generous, innovative and inspiring.

“I know there must be people just like me in the business community who want to do more, and work together to strengthen our society. Now we have a clear pathway and plan to make that happen.”

Mary Pugsley MBE

Economic pressures, workplace housing, and food insecurities are significant challenges facing individuals in our society. We believe that with the right approach, training, and support, individuals can be empowered to transform their lives, live more independently, and contribute value to our society. We have a proven track record of working with individuals from all walks of life and have seen first-hand, on countless occasions, how our unique approach can turn people’s lives around.

Hair in the Community CIC will work in sync with our training salon Hair at the Academy to offer vocational education; collaborating with other charities, not-for-profits, and educational institutions to find, recruit and support individuals who need our help most.

The first initiative we are hoping to fund is in collaboration with St Petrock’s where we want to offer formal barber training to people who have experienced homelessness.

At the end of the course, individuals will be qualified barbers and will be much better equipped to integrate back into society and work.

We are actively seeking funding for the St Petrock’s Barbering programme and are calling out to all businesses in Exeter, and beyond, to back our project financially so that we can make an impact in our community in the months and years ahead.

Your contribution will not only transform the lives of these individuals but also benefit the community at large by providing them with a sustainable path. way to employment and independence. If you are interested in supporting us and giving back to your community, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please email or call Mary Pugsley and we can tell you more about what you could donate, and how that money would be used to fund the programme.
