CUTTING THROUGH THE NOISE
Cutting Through the Noise (CTN), is a community education project by Hair At The Academy, in partnership with VTCT (Vocational Training Charitable Trust). Together, we are promoting vocational education and showing how it can empower change for both individuals and wider communities, particularly when it’s combined with mental health support and awareness training. We already support almost 100 students a year that are unemployed, homeless, living with complex learning needs, mental health issues or disengaged with school or college, but we want to help more.
As part of Cutting Through the Noise, we are proud to be working in partnership with Exeter based charity St Petrock’s that supports people who are homeless or vulnerably housed.
We offer a free fortnightly haircutting service for vulnerable people using the St Petrock’s Centre as a base. The aim of this activity is to not only give a much-needed confidence boost to those who need it most, but also to open conversations about ways that vocational education may be able to improve their situation.
Hair At The Academy is also offering free Level 2 Barbering Courses for the homeless, helping them earn a work-ready qualification to transition to independent living. Contact us to find out more about free haircuts or to learn more about the courses.
Vocational education can be lifechanging, and in some cases lifesaving, for those who have struggled with mainstream education, or are classed as vulnerable within our society. We have a 95% success rate of getting students into further education or paid employment and as part of this initiative, we are working to expand our reach and engage with those who need our help most.
We are doing this by reaching out to schools, colleges, charities, NGO’s and community groups in Exeter, and across Devon, to offer free demonstrations and talks about vocational educational education. With the support of VTCT we have invested in a branded vehicle to take our messaging far and wide and are also sharing student testimonials and offering signposting to education courses, training and mental health support.

We are inviting local businesses in Exeter, and the surrounding areas to get involved with Cutting Through the Noise. We are looking to set up an active network of businesses who can offer employment taster days, work experience, traineeships, and internships to boost the work opportunities for people within our community.
