Our Founder, Mary Pugsley MBE is the beating heart of HAIR AT THE ACADEMY. Mary is a Senior State Registered Hairdresser (SSRH) and since starting THE ACADEMY in 2004 with her daughter Vicky, she has grown the organisation to a 52-week provision educational centre.
With the support of a multi-faculty team that includes tutors, therapists, counsellors and support workers, Mary enrols up to 60 students every year helping them gain qualifications needed to enter the workplace or continue their education.
In 2019, Mary was awarded an MBE for her services to disadvantaged people in Devon, and in 2022 she was recognised by the Collective Pride Awards as ‘Exceptional Educator’.
