KNOWLEDGE AREA

Why is it important to present a professional image in a salon environment?

Working in a salon is a big responsibility as you are a walking advert for the salon, you are also in constant contact with the general public and you will rely on their custom in order to grow your business.

First impressions count as clients will make judgements about a salon as soon as they walk through the door, they will see the way you are dressed and act. Acting and dressing professionally will make your clients want to come back to your salon.

Imagine you are going to a hair and beauty salon for the first time. Think about how you would expect the salon to look and how the staff would act and dressed.

Personal hygiene required for working in a salon

Your personal hygiene is extremely important when working with clients. As a Hairdresser of Beauty Therapist you will work very closely to your client when carrying out treatment services.

A good personal hygiene routine is essential. What should your daily routine include?

Washing: Daily showering or bathing and application of deodorant.

Cleaning Teeth: Should be cleaned twice a day, breath freshener used after smoking or eating strong flavoured foods.

Skincare: Washing you face daily to remove make-up and dirt. It is also a good idea to follow a basic skincare routine.

Hands: Frequent washing throughout the day to remove bacteria and germs. Cuts and abrasions should be covered with a plaster.

Uniform: Kept clean and ironed.

Shoes: Should be kept clean and comfortable. Ideally flat as you are likely to be on your feet for a large part of the day.

Nails: Appropriate in length, clean, free from sharp edges and well maintained.

Hair: Kept clean and not greasy. Hair should be styled according to your profession i.e., Hairdresser or Beauty Therapist.

Jewellery: No dangly jewellery as this could get caught in hair or equipment and cause injury to yourself or your client.

Hairdressers and Beauty Therapists will have slightly different grooming guidelines due to the nature of the treatments and services they will carry out. We will explore these further in the video below.
